This paper describes the development of a three degrees of freedom mouse called Guaiá. The mathematical grounds of the sensor device are described. This device senses the rotation of its body on the work surface where it is handled, and surpasses some deficiencies of common mouses. It is a candidate for utilization in low cost virtual reality systems, where a third degree of freedom is indicated for the control in 3D represented spaces; and for 2D painting systems, where the control of the brush can be enhanced with the controlled rotation.
